History of the MP3

The MP3 audio format is one of the most popular digital audio formats. Over 100 years in the making

The MP3 encoding format used a concept that was developed over 100 years ago, in the late 1800s. This concept is called auditory masking, which is based on lower frequency tones that can make higher frequency tones inaudible. Throughout the years, people created algorithms, technologies, and devices based on the concept of audio masking. Dieter Seitzer and Karlheinz Brandenburg played major roles in refining audio compression and digital encoding, which would later result in the MP3 format. In 1989, Fraunhofer was issued a German patent for the MP3 format.

MPEG

The Moving Picture Experts Group, or MPEG, saw the potential of using audio masking to encode and compress audio into digital files that would be much smaller than CD-quality recordings. As a result, the MPEG committee set the standards for a number of compression formats, including MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. The MP3 file format made its public debut in 1995; the format was issued a United States patent. It didn't take long for the format to catch on, especially with the increasing accessibility of computers and the Internet. Today, the MP3 format is readable by computers, laptops, mobile phones, portable MP3 players, MP3-compatible optical disk drives, and many more devices.
